Don't we all understand accessibility by now? Is there any more room for discussion?

With this event, we're excited to present two talks focused on the realities of accessible web authoring in the days of specifications like ARIA and HTML5. We'll also be looking at challenging assumptions on established, pervasive formats like PDF and Flash. Open or proprietary, the changing landscape of web technologies is throwing up new accessibility (inclusivity) considerations.

Come, join the discussion and find out more.

Assistive Technologies, Léonie Watson

Director of Accessibility at Nomensa, Léonie (@LeonieWatson) will look at the realities of screen readers, including how markup affects accessibility in these times of ARIA and HTML5. Using live demonstrations she’ll show frequently used features. Plus she’ll be updating us on screen reader usage stats and what’s now available on different platforms.

Overview of PDF and Flash Accessibility, Kiran Kaja

Accessibility Engineer at Adobe, Kiran (@kirankaja12) will provide an overview of the current state of accessibility in PDF and Flash. He'll look at how, when properly tagged, PDF documents offer an excellent user experience for users who may have to use assistive technology. Further, he'll discuss creating rich internet applications with multimedia content for the web with all the required accessibility features and how this can be achieved with the Flash platform.

London Web Standards

London Web Standards brings together web professionals who are working for a better web. Our monthly meetups provide them with an opportunity to teach, inspire, learn, network and debate.

Each meetup features a speaker drawn from our membership or the wider standards community. The talks cover a range of topics including HTML5, JavaScript, YQL, accessibility, web fonts, UX and front-end performance.

Come along, drink some beer (or your beverage of choice) and exchange ideas with other web developers, designers and professionals who are as passionate about the web as you are.
